    [ubuntu] Re: Fat32 Defrag Program

I’m not aware of any particular problem with formatting larger drives, as long as they are under the 2TB limitation of FAT32. Do you mean to say you have used Ubuntu’s standard formatting utility...

[all variants] Re: X broken after update

I tried different kernels, to no avail. Sometimes it made it impossible to get X running at all. Perhaps on those occasions reinstalling the Nvidia drivers would have helped.

    I use both GNOME...

[all variants] X broken after update

I recently did an update, which included a kernel update, and now Ubuntu will not start up cleanly. I get the ‘low-graphics mode’ warning. I find that if I choose to fall back to a terminal, the...

[all variants] Re: Can't install Firefox extensions

Yes, it presumably is a problem with downloading via https.

Using SSH, I made my girlfriend’s machine download an XPI file for me, transferred it to my own machine, and installed it. No problem....

[all variants] Re: Can't install Firefox extensions

I’ve also tried disabling even those extensions that are installed system-wide via .deb packages. Still doesn’t work.

My girlfriend’s 32-bit machine can update/install extensions just fine.

[all variants] Re: Can't install Firefox extensions

As I understand it, the OP created a new profile. But I’ve already said that I created a whole new system account, and then ran Firefox. This necessarily creates a new Firefox profile.

[all variants] Re: Can't install Firefox extensions

    I created a fresh account:

    I still couldn’t add extensions.

    I’ve filed a bug:
  9. [all variants] Re: Can Nautilus and OO sort files in "natural" order?

He didn’t ask about case-sensitivity at the system level. He asked whether Nautilus was capable of ignoring case.

Runbei, I've just looked at my own files in Nautilus, and case is ignored. I am...

[all variants] Can't install Firefox extensions

A couple of days ago, I did two things: I upgraded to Karmic, and I reorganised my home folder into a new encrypted drive.

[all variants] Re: Encryption v. temporary files

Well, maybe. It depends. Do such programs save temporary files only in the user’s directory? What about /tmp/? Or somewhere else within the system?

What if I don’t want to slow down my account...

[all variants] Encryption v. temporary files

Recently I’ve been reading about encryption and it’s all fascinating stuff. I’ve read stuff that says that it’s no good encrypting things unless you make sure you shred the decrypted versions.

[ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] can't read udf cd

I believe that this fix is probably out of date by now. Advances in the Linux kernel probably make it unnecessary.

Type ‘uname -a’ on the command line. What is the output?

OK, thanks for the tip to use testdisk. I've recorded a log; here it is attached.

I think I'll go out and buy a new hard drive so I can back stuff up before I make any more repair attempts.
