Installing the 3.2 kernel did the job for me on a Dell Latitude D610 that suffered from this annoying problem.

To fix:
add "options snd-hda-intel model=targa-dig"
To the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
reboot

This works better for me because when using the headphone the speakers disable...
