Have you done any more with this? I have a kiosk application that I'm hoping to use the X50 for, and a test run gave me similar issues. I'm trying 12.04, and the cursor is just wild.

I had this same problem; turns out, it was caused by some orphan i-nodes. The short of it: run fsck on the partition before attempting to clone it.

It would be easier to use the BIOS boot device controls; that way you can restore your Winblows bootloader on the internal, and only have grub on the MBR of the external. Just change the boot...

You can change the default settings for this with gconf-editor:

You might want to look at rdiff instead; it has the backup feature you are trying for already built in.

Oddly, the accuracy is better with fingers than with the included stylus; it seems to track a ways to the right and a hair below the stylus pointer. The edges of the screen are also a challenge, but...

BTW- @phiworld: HP L2105tm comes with a stylus. I haven't played with it enough to issue an opinion on the accuracy, but at first run it seems pretty solid. Better than the little signature pads at...
