You could do it at a friend with a windows pc and iTunes installed or someone with a mac.
You can also install a minimal XP on your PC as a dual-boot,...
If it's a different HD, I don't think there will be any problems.
I'd suggest Skype, I use it all the time for video conferencing.

I you want to be sure it works out of the box, start up a LiveCD, if everything works in the Live System everything works when fully installed too.
However, if it doesn't you can still make it work,...
If it ignores FAT32, it will ignore USB-sticks too.

I would place the files back and do a normal upgrade to 3.0, you don't have to worry about anything, everything works great, I'm using it right now!
You should try a speedtest to test if this is really the case.
