The only way I know that this might be possible is via a "multiseat" setup and ofc install say gnome and xfce and use your login manager (gdm, kdm etc etc..) to login to the DE/WM you want.

1) I'm not using gnome/unity - using XFCE (I presume your using them from "System > Preferences ..." But to answer your question yes I've tried and it makes no odds at...
