Similar issue, I think. My system had been idle for some time while I was at work. On return, Gnome-panel was frozen (which it does fairly regularly, and is related to NFS or SSHFS flakiness, and...
This is an intriguing question, I hope. I would dearly love to have it answered.
I have a LAN at home, with a fairly dependable Internet connection. However, when the Internet connection goes...
This is waaay too late, but this thread helped me correct the complex search I was trying (and failing) to do.
Applying what finally worked for me to the problem Luke presented, he should try:

Fixed my particular version of this issue. It seems the bindwood add-on was the problem. Uninstalled it and firefox resumed fast start-up and with bookmarks-toolbar intact.
I can confirm this bug as described by lykeion. However, HTop reveals that firefox-bin is not frozen, but just really tied up doing something (fluctuating 60-99% cpu and 99-115M memory), in my case...
I tried what vikrant82 said, and it works for me:
The Empathy dialog instructions say use only username. That never worked.
For completeness, it is now fixed, and I think this is what fixed it: (from synaptic history)
(aka "apt-get purge")
...and then installed (or reinstalled):
The awn packages were included...

Upgraded to Lucid. Condition persists. Cannot change window theme, or change sound settings. :(
Anybody?
Additionally, I am planning to upgrade to Lucid. But I wanted to resolve this first, since I fear it will persist across the upgrade.
Any ideas on doing an upgrade as a solution? Or any other...
Sorry to start another thread, but I cannot find anything remotely close to a solution anywhere. Searching for days.
The problem started after my system froze and I had to push reset to restart. ...
Update
I needed the ppa.launchpad.net version (1.1.3+r409-0ubuntu2~ppa1~karmic) to get my machine added to the Ubuntu One server, but then nothing would upload, and I had no panel icon. I had to...
That was easy (for me)! Thanks Joshua! And thanks to the Ubuntu One Desktop+ team!
Everyone seems to be able to get this to work eventually. I'm still stuck.
Briefly, selecting System > Preferences > UbuntuOne shortly results in an enormous error popup which displays the...
OK, with things the way they are in my system, it seems the command (to simulate user activity, from blueproximity) "gnome-screensaver-command -p" is the culprit. Removing that from the...
It has happened before.

Sadly, no informative solution. If 'just rebooting' was the only fix, we might as well never...
Using OOo 3.1 with Karmic. File menu keeps popping up (as if I had done Alt-F) on its own every 20 seconds or so. This only happens when OpenOffice has focus. These uncalled file menu popups do...
Thanks for all the work on this How-To.
I'm using Hardy on an AMD64. Pulse has been strange lately, often crashing Rhythmbox. So I followed your How-To as much as I could, except one thing. ...
I love blueproximity, but it has on occasion failed to detect my return. I would like to run a small script as a cron job to restart it hourly to see if that remedies the issue.
But, how does...
I really tried to find where this might best be presented, and found that while everywhere was almost appropriate, nowhere was better than 'General Help.' So here goes:
I have two webcams...
I have searched for some clue to solve this, but of the few things I have found, none of them work.
I just want BlueProximity to run a script when I leave, which will start 'motion', the webcam...
4+ years on Linux, most of that on Ubuntu. Having made the transition to dual booting before 'going all the way', I have to say I wish I had just dived in, no dipping of the toe first.

Opus III - It's a Fine Day (http://www.pigradio.com/pig128.pls)
Well this has only come up three times (from searching here using 'stamps.com'), but it has always peeved me that the United States Postal Service has invited MSWindows-only private companies to sell...
