Right, this is working fairly smoothly now.
To turn on the apt-cacher pre-caching functionality, you need to edit /etc/cron.daily/apt-cacher
Insert the following above the line: # Run the cache...
OK, apt-cacher does support this, but I haven't found any documentation on how to do it yet.
The appropriate script is /usr/share/apt-cacher/apt-cacher-precache.pl
There is a cron job for...
Is it possible to configure a cron script to update the packages in /var/cache/apt-cacher/packages?
When a client machine updates a package, apt-cacher checks that it's cached package is...
Just to let you know, my N900 arrived a week ago.
It is a thing of wonder and beauty; I utterly utterly love it. It is one of the few devices I've ever bought that manage to live up to my...
I've managed to sanitise my facebook news feed to a reasonable level now. Any new applications, quizzes or other distractions are blocked.
However, they still show up on Gwibber. Before I run off...

Awesome. SSH is ridiculously useful.
You can SSH from another network, but you'll probably need to set up port-forwarding on your router. SSH uses port 22 by default, but you can always change...
Done here as well.
Just as an extra, I notice that you're using surveymonkey.
Could I recommend Limesurvey ( http://www.limesurvey.org/ ) as an open source alternative for any future surveys...
Why run the risk of a full-blown SSH server if it is unnecessary? Wouldn't the simple web interface that Transmission provides be a simpler, more "sandboxed" solution?
If it is just for Transmission, you can do it by switching on the Transmission Web Interface. Have a look at the Web tab in the Transmission Settings. Then you can access & control Transmission via a...
Are you running it with wine? Windows messenger has very poor results on the appdb, so you probably won't get very far.

Glad to hear it. :D
Not necessarily. A desktop install can be a file server quite happily, so there would be no need to reinstall to get a fileserver up and running. Only possible point would be that because want your...
Sounds like you're not connected to the internet, but apt-get is trying to download everything from the online repositories.
Are you trying to install stuff from a CD, or the online repos?
Just a quick note:
You should really be using gksudo, not sudo when opening GUI programmes like gedit. Keep sudo for command-line stuff only.
To back up your home directory (and get everything) try using rsync.
rsync -av /path/to/your/old/home/directory /path/to/backup/destination
That'll backup your whole home directory to...
That's because hard drive manufacturers don't actually use the same scale as an operating system does. The HDD people calculate 500GB as 500 x 1000000000 bytes.
Now, computers work in multiples of...
Did you install smbfs? You definitely shouldn't need to run Nautilus as root, but as an aside, if you ever do run any graphical program as su, you should use gksudo, not sudo.
What's stopping you from accessing the windows share? You might need to install smbfs while using the livecd.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install smbfs
Depends on how the drives...
Print the instructions out? Save them as a file (like a pdf/ps etc) and put them on a USB key? Write them on a bit of paper? :D
Point you in the direction of what, exactly? Could you be a bit more specific?
Python is installed by default. The python tutorial on python.org is fine, but there are plenty of others. Python is...
The support table hasn't been updated yet (I should really make the appropriate page) but 9.04 works well on my Macbook 2,1.
I haven't fully tested everything (iSight, Microphone etc) because I...
Just being picky, Purple, but it's recommended to use gksu or gksudo for graphical programmes. Keep sudo for terminal applications.
See http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo for more...
Just checked his complaints about the way pidgin and Rhythmbox work. In both cases they work fine when the tray functionality is enabled in their respective preferences.
Ubuntu is trying something...
