try this....
hit Alt-F2
type in gksu nautilus
Then browse to your fstab file, open, edit - now you should be able to save it - because you have root privileges with gksu

you should be able to mount the share...
as /IP/Share /mnt/"name of your share"

are you using ntlmaps?
try loading a VM of 8.10 and execute your mass copy and see if you get the same problems with freezing.
What are your hardware specs?
I disagree. Ubuntu should be able to handle a copy process whether the quantity is large or not.

I know that I have had my fair share of problems with Hardy, I am running 8.10 Intrepid right now, and happy with the stability. I have had no problems burning any type of data with 8.10.
