    [ubuntu] Re: Linux on alienware-m11x?

Depends what model you have. I have an R1 and video out on the VGA port works flawlessly. I guess the R2 and R3 don't have a VGA port though.

Bumblebee is for laptops with Optimus graphics switching and the R1 doesn't have the technology for graphics switching...

You can put the script anywhere you like and it should be run at startup each time.

I think bumblee is for optimus which is specifically for R2 (and R3 I think). Both are considered to have "hybrid graphics" though

Overclock that baby already! I've had that setting enabled since I got my machine in September and I don't think it's ever caused my problems.

really? I notice a 1W drop when I turn off wifi. I'm not sure what else can be done to lower power consumption further. Are all of the LEDs off on the keyboard?

So I've been really bothered by the jumpy cursor when I accidental have two points of input on the trackpad, but I found a way to fix it on the notebook review forums

Yup, I use an external monitor all the time. Sometimes I have to click on Monitors in the System menu in order to get it to work.

Alienware has no support for linux, but it works anyways.

I have an m11x R1 and it works great

    [ubuntu] Re: Linux on alienware-m11x?

I haven't had any issues with heat to be honest.

Unrelated: Has anyone successfully gotten the latest intel drivers loaded? I want to get some better video performance so I can run gnome-shell

[ubuntu] Re: Help with Alienware M11x

You have to enable restricted repos in the software sources and install the restricted wifi driver.

Yeah, the ACPI call method works well.

As for enabling the nvidia GPU... I don't know. I've seen lots of mentions of white screens after installing the restricted drivers.

    [ubuntu] Re: Linux on alienware-m11x?

Yeah, the R1 has pretty good support. It's possible if you follow the instructions in this thread to turn off the nvidia GPU and get a good 6 hours of battery. The R1 also has a VGA port which I find...

I think so, but I'm not sure. You should look at the product manual to see which ones you can use.

    [ubuntu] Re: Linux on alienware-m11x?

Ya, it's a pci half card. I'm pretty sure most intel cards work well with linux. Atheros might also be worth looking at, though they can be a little more tricky.

You may have to go into the bios and set it to always use dedicated graphics. Otherwise it will try and use the intel card

You probably need to enable restricted (read: proprietary) drivers. It's usually pretty easy. I think it's under System->Administration->Hardware
