delete in nautilus isn't the only thing missing . Gedit is missing a print command , I had to install leafpad yesterday to print a text file .
try getting chrome direct from google rather than the repo version .

how did you get mate in the live session ? I don't see a mate .iso and when I tried to install it from the live session it says package not found .
on my installed xenial-gnome-desktop there is no trace of unity installed ( only a couple of shared libs ) and no compiz and it uses mutter as the WM .
for information , I am running xenial-gnome and I am not seeing any of those packages wanting to be removed .
it wouldn't have to be on the same drive just the same computer . you can use the working install to examine the failed install to try to get a clue .
