  1. [ubuntu] Sound too low, everything maxed out in alsamixer

I've bought a new computer on which I'm using a cheap Logitech headset, but I have a problem.

The sound from the headset is too low, even though everything in alsamixer and on the headset itself...

[ubuntu] Check for updates, even on battery

I almost always set my laptop to charge up over night and use it unplugged during the day.

Whenever I open Update Manager to check for updates it warns me that I'm running on battery power....

[ubuntu] Re: Screensaver often doesn't activate

Bump. Now I'm on new hardware (laptop as opposed to my desktop) and this is still a problem.

I found out that killing gnome-screensaver (killall gnome-screensaver) and starting it again will get...

There's no correct name. They're both valid. From 'man modprobe':

[ubuntu] Re: Setting audio volume very quiet

Try setting PCM along with Master. You can also use percent when setting the levels (see man amixer). It might be easier for you to use gnome-volume-control.

Sure you're not meaning gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse? That update hasn't reached my mirror yet - perhaps I should steer clear of it for a while...

You can track down the changes made during the update from Synaptic. File > History.

Avi is just a container format, so try running Totem from a terminal window to determine what encoding format was used. Post the output from Totem here.

[ubuntu] Re: Why do i need java?

You don't need it until you know you do.

You may need it for home banking, some web based games and other stuff.

  15. [ubuntu] Re: "My Top Rated" folder not working in Rhythmbox

Oh, that's another problem. I don't think the ratings are applied directly to your files, in neither Rhythmbox nor iTunes. You want to import your iTunes library ratings into your Rhythmbox library....
  16. [ubuntu] Re: "My Top Rated" folder not working in Rhythmbox

I've deleted all of my playlists so I don't know if they are editable. If they are, you should find the solution editing "My Top Rated" in a fashion similar to the one described below.
