I have the same issue. I'm about to rebuild the machine on 11.10, but I'm hoping to find a solution before it comes to that.
I was having a similar problem upgrading from Oneiric. Running ppa-purge on all PPAs, and then removing them one by one with software-sources fixed it.
I'm pretty sure I have the exact same issue. I'm going to poke around tonight and see what I can see. I thought maybe its settings had gotten screwed up over the course of many upgrades. :)
