That stopped the permanent screen flicker, but still froze the entire system and had to hard boot. Before I could still move the cursor around and click things I just couldn't see what I was doing....

That was it! Well at least it says my system is up to date, and gave no errors looking for updates. We'll see in a week or so but I believe this was the issue.
