nvidia refuses to open up their drivers, and says that their proprietary drivers are "good enough." So on one hand we can't be too terribly happy with nvidia because they will not allow US in on...
Are you using two monitors? "Screen1" shows a resolution capability of ONLY 640x480@60hz. If you are not using two monitors you may try backing up your xorg.conf, removing (or commenting out) that...
A few things to try off the top of my head:
Hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the X server (the GUI backend)
Hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 to change virtual terminals, see if you get to a terminal screen...
Criticism aside about the price to performance gain ratio, the drivers for the 4870 seem to be stable, as illustrated here:

I might have to give that a look-see, then.

Actually, I just picked up the 'Clue!' move at Target for five bucks. Haven't watched it yet, but it's pretty good. Before that I think it was Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Smith is of a completely different character than said drink. I think he'll maintian his ways and become quire the role model.
Let us know how it's worked out! I'm not looking to switch from Ubuntu, but I'm always looking to try new things!
This is, actually, rather hilarious. Just two days ago I, as an ultra-newbie to programming, specifically python, struggled to make exactly that -- a 10x10 matrix.
I could've used this a couple of...
