    The bios is back to its original configuration. There must be some kind of rights issue preventing the proprietary driver to load but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it. Very frustrating!

    I don't suspect the driver. It's more likely the xorg.conf file nVidia creates with its auto configuration. I have one xorg.conf file right at /(root) which doesn't seem to be a standard config file....
