do you have a gui desktop installed on the server, by default the server edition does not install one.

yes it is permissions, use groups for samba shares (I found this the easiest way) and then add the users to the groups.

Try this, even though you want to use the machine username, your conf file is saying you are using samba user/passwords.



# smbpasswd -a user1

looks like you are missing the "valid user=" line in your share section.
