I have now managed to do this by myself, but thanks for all previous help.
Actually I spoke too soon: now my dual monitors only work in 'mirror' mode.
If I go into 'Displays' and uncheck 'Mirror displays' and click the 'Apply' button I get a dialog that says
I ran sudo apt-get install fglrx which seemed to go fine (no error messages) and returned me to my normal $ prompt.
I rebooted and it seemed to boot OK, and I entered my password at the usual...
I ran the three sudo commands, one after another, and then the
apt-cache policy fglrx

Thanks guys! I went with the second solution because it seemed more fool-proof (I don't like editing system files by hand if I can avoid it) and this did the trick.
Despite being a bit of a newbie, a few months ago I thought I would test the alpha release, so I downloaded the file and burned the .iso to CD.

I had Tweak installed already, so that was the simplest & quickest solution.
The folders ("Downloads", "Music", etc.) that are in my Home directory also appear on my desktop, and I can't found out how to hide them / remove them from the desktop.
