You're absolutely right, I have a custom compiled KDE 4.10.3 setup on Gentoo and the just compiled from KDE's official sources on my linux from scratch box (the box I test everything new on before I...
Still no use flags but I think with arch you have to manually go through the configure section, with gentoo the use flags are variables for that section of the build.
That's just a file for...
I've always ran ubiquity --debug and it'll install perfectly, just don't click the install now button use try ubuntu.
VLC loads the dvd in 1.5 seconds in Linux, so I'm assuming that there's maintainers at work messing up the build for windows? It does load, just takes 5 minutes. I want to know if anyone else is...
I've never heard of a global config file for such use flags, I think you just need to edit the configure section of the PKGBUILD and just do --enable-something command. It's how I enabled dts and...
Post this in the seven or eight forums, but sounds like a driver issue, does it work in Linux? If it does download the latest driver from the Linux host and install it on windows and it should work. ...
Print has never been that great in Linux, and if you're doing prints I'd probably stay with the industry standard which is Photoshop. There's krita if you like painting. Linux to me has a long long...
I'm upgrading my PC and plan on purchasing 2 radeon 7990's or possibly 3X 7970 GHZ edition gfx cards, I was also looking at 2X gtx titans but that's a bit more than what I want to personally spend...
okay whenever you install a new kernel in ubuntu it SHOULD have a path of /usr/src/linux.
So like in every other distro just run make headers_install
Just a pro tip, ubuntu ships with some bad kernels and generally everything is ticked if you decidedd to open menuconfig.
I always recommend for those that are capable to download the latest kernel...
An installer is only updated when it needs to be, and the installer has been broken for 2 released versions now.
It's plausible but not likely.
Clutter 1.14 and 1.14.1 work great under gnome-3.8, use earlier versions of clutter for gnome 3.6
These bugs are specific to ubuntu not to the Openbox source code itself, I'd personally recompile a .deb but it's been a decade since I've done any debian packaging.
I've compiled it from source...
13.04 was just released and I've said time and time again it's ubiquity that is the issue, the ubuntu installer is one of the worst in the linux community.
From my experience.

Openbox, Xmonad, Awesome!
Desktop:
Cinnamon 1.8, KDE, XFCE4, Razor-qt
QT is the future, it's far more powerful than gtk and looks a lot nice when done right.
What bugs are you talking about? I just installed openbox to see what you're talking about and I'm finding it stable.
You should be okay with libre-office, but since your going to school in all i probably wouldn't use linux (call me crazy) but libre-office just isn't that great when opening up office 2013 documents...
A Gui desktop is perfectly possible however... he will have to compile from source, I recommend arch but gentoo may be easier to manage due to the fact it's probably a 486 but could be a 586 cpu, he...
OLD PCs/Macs still have use today, just not as much as when you originally bought them.
Most are used as file servers.
I'm moving away from source distros but there are some things I still need to compile, arch linux is somewhat of a hybrid distro it's binary by default but does have a ports system so it can compile...
He's well in line with Arch Linux, I'm actually moving over to Arch Linux from Gentoo (I can't be bothered to compile everything from source, I will still compile the kernel from source, and my...
Debian 7 ISO 1 is what you want to download, if you have a fast connection install from a netinstall cd (I have a 120MBPS connection so I go with net install but even a lower 20MB or even 10MBPS will...
Without knowing what your CPU is it's hard to say, was this a custom PC build from back in the day or was it purchased from a vendor like HP, Dell, Gateway2000(gateway now), compaq, etc?
Please...
My favorite distros are Gentoo, but I use Funtoo due to the better core, and arch linux. I'd love to try source mage, but the installer is OLD, 2 years to be exact.
