This really bugged me. I think the best way is to load the image file into a GdkPixbuf, then usegdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf to load the image into your cairo context. So, (if you're trying to draw...
This also worked for me on 11.10. I've been struggling with this for days. I now have dual monitors working.
I had the same problem when I used this guide, but I fixed it. The wording is a little unclear. It says to extract "netathw.inf" from the zip file, but in actual fact you need the other files too....
