@ erikvw : Awesome; thanks!
I have been running the ppa wine 1.3, so all I had to do was to grab the kindle for PC app from the amazon page. Bingo, it works....
I'm running 32-bit 10.10 .
What do you mean by not marking the root file? The root directory is not auto-determined, or something else? Are you talking about some deficiency in the wubi install, or something with a...
Thanks! That set me on the right track.
Was looking at man apt_preferences, and somehow got the idea to check wajig, which got me to look for an analogous aptitude command. (Since this is on a...
This is probably very basic -- I'm trying to find the best way to keep a patched version of a package from being overwritten during upgrades.
I've decided to install a ppa version of .deb file (via...
Hmm -- how about trying the complete dpkg path, and piping to 'less' or 'more' ?
/usr/bin/dpkg --get-selections | more
I had been using xpdf because I could use the -rv flag to get a reverse black/white display scheme for night reading, e.g.:
xpdf -rv pdffile.pdf
Now, however, I'm back to using evince (gnome...
Well, I also use vim/vi and like the command line, both of which are very dated.
Usually I like the more minimal solutions -- gedit with a few plugins (console, etc.), bypthon, ipython, vi + bash...
It's minimalistic and reasonably configurable (as this thread shows). It's great for small projects. But it's a matter of taste, no?
I don't have a strong opinion either way -- I like some of the changes, and am inconvenienced by others.
But Mark Shuttleworth is pushing for design improvements -- check out his blog for evidence...
Don't use skype, so unfortunately can't help there -- for the volume control, you might check this thread:

For some reason, I didn't have the...
What's the issue with it, exactly? Is it not appearing with the Indicator Applet?
You could theoretically have a different .cloginrc for every user on your system.
You don't have to log in from the rancid account or with the rancid user.
If you are trying to use clogin from...
Yeah, you can even make a whole new 'panel.' Right click on an empty spot on your existing panel and choose 'Add to panel...' or 'New Panel' to make a new panel. The main applets I've had to...
obscenic & dl7und:
Ah, thanks guys.
I've upgraded five systems to lucid (starting with alphas), and done one fresh install. Didn't have the issues on the fresh install, but had variations of...
Haven't had a chance to try out streaming in firefox here, but thought I'd pass along this link, in case you hadn't tried it:

Could you provide us with a description (or URL) of the files that work versus cause problems?
Oddly, I've had that fail before. I probably had some tweak in place that broke the default behavior -- which is why I added the additional tweak of sym-linking vlc to 'totem' . Yuck.
"System -> Preferences -> Preferred Applications" might work here, though I don't know exactly what type of files trigger the 'multimedia' execution. I think if this is set to 'custom' with 'vlc'...
That didn't work for me, however, forcing a rewrite of PAM configuration worked:
$ sudo pam-auth-update --force
For reference, I've been making some progress. I checked /var/lib/auth.log and saw issues with cracklib. Some of the issues were resolved by redoing PAM auth:
% sudo pam-auth-update --force
...
I'm having similar issues, also with the updated lucid release.
I'd open a bug somewhere, but don't know where it should go. I'll look around some more, but for now --
The keyring daemon is...
When you say 'origami' are you talking about the origami app?
(i.e., https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FoldingAtHome/origami )
Whew. Well, /etc/pyscrabble contains the server_console.cfg file.
Ports are 8888 and 9999 by default.
# game_port: port the Game Server will listen on
# web_port: port the Web Configuration...
Wow. This worked. (I also removed .pulse-cookie for good measure.) Thank you!
