well the 'esc' and 'tab' buttons on the side seem to work alright. even with XP i never really used the Q button or screen output buttons, or the screen rotation. i use it for image editing so...
so i uninstalled the xserver-xorg-input-wacom package and reinstalled it. now the pen is working! seems like that older patch was the thing getting in the way.
