Hi, OldFred
Tks for your note. Any support is good when one's battling against the odds.
A bit of background ...
I've been using Ubuntu and then Xubuntu when Ubuntu started getting fat for about...
BTW
gpt is not on the 20.04 installation media that I have and SecureBoot won't let me boot systemrescuecd as recommended by Rod Smith
jg
Tks Oldfred I was coming to the same conclusion. Looking at the Wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UEFI/SecureBoot) there is plenty of advice on installing foreign drivers and homespun kernels but...
I have a Dell XPS13 with 2 Xubuntu partitions, a live system and a reserve system in case I screw up the live one. Recently upgraded both from 18.04 (Bionic) to 20.04 (Focal) using the standard LTS...
Hi, Thomas
Yes the multi session thing is a pain, but not such a nuisance nowadays as it was 20 years ago when files were so much smaller. Most of my current CD usage is for start-up/recovery...
Interesting postscript ...
Tried to recreate a Xubuntu 12.04.4 Live CD with a bad end block/run-out but the new image on repository has grown to 780MB - too big for a CD. So used Brasero to...
Thomas, that's brill.
Once upon a time (it may even have been in windows 3.1 when CDs were still quite a new thing) I'm sure Brasero had an option to write SAO and the default was TAO. There used to...
I've now done a heap more tests and my summarised findings are as follows. I have the terminal outputs but there is far too much to post here.
It appears that there are 3 problems at work here....
Wow ! There's a fair bit to digest here and it's a bit late this evening.
But what you say seems to make sense on a quick first reading although it doesn't matter where the CD was cut, or if it was...
Thomas, tks for your reply. It looks like it's the Lx driver that's adrift in 18.04. After installing xorriso I get much the same output as you:
jg@jg-XPS17:~$ xorriso -read_speed max -outdev...
I have now done an out-of-the-box fresh install of 18.04.2 selecting 3rd party s/w (as normal for display drivers etc), with no updates and the CD problem is now back, reading at 614.9-615.0 KB/s....
It appears to be a CD read problem. It doesn't matter where or how the CD was cut, Windows, MAC, Ubuntu, or commercial ROM.
Doing some more tests I have isolated the problem to the Xubuntu 16.04 ->...
My Dell XPS17 has been running OK with 16.04 and has recently done the upgrade to 18.04.2. The CD/DVD drive worked fine on 16.04 to the extent that this was the device of choice for recording and...
It's rubbish
No control over security, cookies, scripts - everything relies on Google etc whom we all love and trust!!
Slow and bloated with unnecessary features you can no longer turn off
Looking...
1fallen, tks for this.
I followed your process except that I didn't update grub. However, I have done a kernel upgrade in the meantime so grub config has been updated (although I'm not sure that...
Tks, Wild Man
Loathed to bump as it could appear pre-emptive for a Linux numpty like me.
But will take your advice - at least for a while to see if anything comes of it.
Happy days!
Power manager still asks for authentication from time to time, even when going for suspend. Despite 200+ views of this thread, I'm disappointed that no-one has said anything. Has no-one else...
Inching forward ...
Installed uswsusp and now power manager will suspend OK but still doesn't hibernate. At least it's a bit better than hanging there waiting for authentication and just crashing...
Still wrestling with this issue. Thinks ....
If I could run Power Manager as Root, it would have the necessary permissions to suspend/hibernate the system when needed.
1) Tried to find a way to...
I have 3 laptops running Xubuntu 16.04 Xenial: Dell Inspiron1300 (2006), Dell XPS17 (2012), PackardBell Netbook DotSE (2010). All capable of seamless suspend/hibernate using WinXP (Inspiron1300) or...
Thanks for the tip, Frogs Hair! This is new to me. I've made myself a CD and hope to try it in the next day or two. Nice that one can download the whole distro, too. Makes me feel less nervous.

Hi, Guys
Tks for your quick response. Dino99 has the best idea but I don't get an IT budget like the rest of the family so I have to make do with kit others have finished with. They've all just...
I have a V Old (Pentium3) Packard Bell with 127MB RAM, 8GB+4GB IDE disks, floppy disk + CD/DVD -R/W drive. This ran a very acceptable Xubuntu system 7.10 Gutsy which I managed to destroy yesterday. ...
Last five...
