New update......... it's working again. weird
I am running 12.04 on a Dell laptop. I use the shift and control keys quite a bit to help select more than one file. This worked fine for months, but after a kernel update, they stopped working....
bump
I went into my /etc/modules and I don't have a "rtc" to delete. Here it is :
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should...
First, Thank you for your reply !
I did try to use the arrow keys in alsamixer. And I will try the fix in your link. Most of the fixes I have read and tried have been adding a line to alsa.conf,...
I did check Alsamixer, although I don't know much about it. I posted a picture of my alsamixer in #4 on the first page. Nothing appears to be muted, but the volumes are down and can't be adjusted.
So we are at a stand-still now ?
I booted up on the liveCD for both 12.10 and 13.04. Sound did not work for either out of the box.
I love Ubuntu and really want to get this fixed.
Not sure how to do that. I wanted to stay with the LTS version, but do you think the new Ubuntu 13 would fix this ? It would be worth trying the liveCD of Ubuntu 13.
But if I stayed with the LTS,...
I reinstalled again only using gdeb instead of software center. gdeb said the package was installed, but I went ahead and installed again. After that I ran the terminal command and rebooted. Still no...
From the link you gave me, I installed the third one down which is:
dkms-hda - 0.201302121940~precise1
I can try to install again. It appeared to install correctly with software center. I have...
Here is a picture of alsamixer:
Thank you very much for your reply. As you saw in my first post, I don't have a clue how to fix sound.
I downloaded the deb package and installed it, followed by the terminal command and reboot....
So that I didn't add to this long forum, I started my own thread outlining my issues. Could some of you sound guru's take a peek ? I would sure appreciate it

I have a dell inspiron N4110 with an Intel 6 series/c200 high definition audio controller. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and have no sound from speakers or headphones. Mircophone doesn't work either. This...
Daniel,
That worked like a charm. I am ever so grateful. Thank you very much, I learned something today.
You truly are the grub master !
Daniel,
Thank you so much. I will try this as soon as I get back to my laptop. This makes a lot of sense and looks like it is going to work.
Thank you
Thank you Oldfred ! I don't know if I understand all this, but I sure will dive in. Looks like I have some homework to do.
Again......Thank you
read another command that had worked for other people running 12.04. so I tried
sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot/ --force /dev/sda3
again it said it...
Thank you. I don't think it is an Apple issue, but it won't hurt to ask them. I just need to re-install grub and keep it inside my Ubuntu partition. Of the three OS's, I use Ubuntu 99% of the time so...
Update:
I read where to force grub to install on a certain partition and tried this:
booted up on liveCD
opened terminal and ran
sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
sudo grub-install...
I have a triple boot computer with Mac, Ubuntu 12.04, and win7. Ubuntu is installed on sda3. I had installed grub inside sda3 as not to screw up the mac boot loader that I need.
I use grub...
Just went with VMware Fusion
Thank You very much 2F4U.
I read on some posts that I should use reFind instead of reFit. I tried both but still no luck.
