Ok, firstly sorry, it is syslog and kern.log I am looking at -I pasted a back copy before edit.
in my /etc/logrotate.conf file, i put in exactly
/var/log/syslog {

Go to panel preferences and edit Notification area, check that icon size =16px as below the nm-applet icon vanishes!
update to xfce 4.10 fixes it I think.
