Ubuntu isn't (yet?) a rolling release distribution.
So you don't get the newest versions in the repos.
You can't use apt-get to install it as they don't have PPA, but you can compile it...

Maybe you can try something like Xubuntu or Lubuntu ?
And try the LTS (10.04 Lucid Lynx), it will (perhaps) work better !

I successfully upgraded to Ibex on my Macbook.
I just had to add "Windows List" to my gnome panel, and change the theme back.
But basically, that's it ! It works like a charm :)
