If you are planning to use software raid (you probably aren't) you shouldn't use ubuntu. mdadm in ubuntu is ridiculously out of date.
I got the grey screen as well. I fixed it by making the changes in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom instead of /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

It would seem that the problem is hardware related in my case at least. Thanks for the help anyway:)
I have the same issue. I haven't changed anything that i can think of. This is really annoying! Please Help!

Forgot to add that I'm using Mythbuntu 8.04
I've been trying to get mythbuntu to work for a while now. When i press "Watch TV" the screen simply flashes for a second and nothing else happens. I have no idea if things are correctly configured...
I'm guessing it has something to do with buffering. The more that is buffered the faster printing to the console is (don't know anything about fortran though).
