I've installed 10.04 and 10.10 32 bit Ubuntu and both work but need a the initial Installation code altering to remove the final sun Java related stuff removing to read:

New installs of 10.10 i386 on Thinkpad T40 (1.5GHz 1GB RAM) and also old PC fitted with Asus CUSL3 motherboard and PIII 900MHz with 512Mb RAM.

Try putting "sudo" in front of the command.
My bad - you also need to "show hidden files" and it's all there!

We hear and understand what you're saying but if you want help then you need to at least do the above....
Regarding MTU etc, I assume you're asking what they're supposed to be on the router.
I also assume from the IP address that you're using a Netgear router, so I suggest pressing the recessed reset...
