    I had same problem on Advent 7111 laptop after I've installed 9.10, it's working now as I disabled visual effects. Other thing that is working for me is to log into system in GNOME Failsafe mode.

    Thanks, it's worknig. I couldn't stand that noise, it felt as someone was sticking needles into my speakers.

    I would like to install VLC 1.0 on my Ubuntu 8.04 but it doesn't work. I have checked 'multiverse' in Open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager -> Settings -> Repositories)...
