  3. [gnome] Re: make partition mount at same point automatically

prefix those numbers with UUID= as seen in the rest of the fstab. Also, make sure that /media/disk-2 exists (if it doesn't, `sudo mkdir -p /media/disk-2` from a console will do the trick).
  4. [gnome] Re: make partition mount at same point automatically

Assuming your partition is formatted as ext3, add this line to /etc/fstab

    /dev/sda4 /media/disc-2 ext3 defaults 0 0

Alternately, you could use UUID=XXXXXXXXXX instead of sda4. To find the UUID,...

I just remembered this, if you still have SOME kernel installed, then running "sudo update-grub" should find it (while you're in the chroot). What happens if you just tell it to install "linux-image"...

albinootje is right, that will fix your sudo command (or should, you may have to do it from root as "recovery mode" when you boot). but there's no telling what other programs need their setuid bit...

Regarding the Synaptic issue, what happens if you run the following from a terminal (as a normal user)?
    gksu synaptic

Are there any error messages then?

[ubuntu] Re: Decreasing Gnome login time

If you've got RAM to spare, preload works great.
    sudo apt-get install preload

Also, you can disable some items in Preferences-->Sessions if you feel you wont ever need them.

You need g++. Also, you have a .c extension, which the compiler will assume to be C (not C++). Using .cc or .cpp is recommended, instead. So in the end your command to compile and run your program...

  14. [ubuntu] Re: How can I know the file format of a tar ball ?

If all else fails you can
gunzip $FILENAME.tar.gz which will decompress it and remove the .gz extension, leaving an uncompressed tarball, where you can just "tar -xf $FILENAME.tar" on the other.

When you're at the GRUB boot list, press 'e' for Edit while on the failing kernel, and you should see something like
