    I downloaded the 4 debs from Debian Multimedia, then compiled and installed ffmpeg -- the time it took to compile is what I just delayed in replying. This notebook is still pretty hot...

    Ok, the problem solved itself. I did NOT uninstalled nvidia-kernel-common and linux-restricted-modules-*, but instead blacklisted only the nvidia driver from being loaded -- so wireless works...
