I resolved the issue of not being able to log in on lightdm by installing lightdm-gtk-greeter.

Was having this issue on 12.04, I followed macho's advice and installed lightdm-gtk-greeter. Problem Solved! Thanks Macho!!

Adding this parameter is exactly what I needed!
