Oh, the obvious place then.
The end of the story in case someone with similar issue read this.
At login , i see "ubuntu xorg" and "unity", but ubuntu xorg is selected. Not sure what mode it was...
Tanks. I'll try xorg session. Nouveau probably isn't an option with steam.
But then, canonical is in change in integrating them into ubuntu.
Maybe I should look on nvidia broad. Didn't thought about it, but...
Where would the log be ?
And nice idea about the wrong...
Having the same here.
To explain the long story.
The day before yesterday, I'm happily playing cities skylines. Everything works.
Yesterday, I start the computer to play. Login screen is at...
The problem comes with SE linux in kernel 4.4 being more restrictive, and insisting the kernel module be signed. Meaning that if secure boot is on, you have to do a few trick to get it to work :...
After banging my heads against walls for a while i finally learned what was causing my graphic card issue. Secure boot prevents installation of proprietary drivers. (among other things).
No...
Let me try a guess. You bios is in UEFI with secure boot on ?
UP !
I *really* need some help here.
Still no change, worked for a little while, then, went broken again. (can't login unless you do a nvidia* purge)
Live CD won't boot, so clean re-install...
I see I'm not the only one feeling disheartened by theses issues. Was fixed, then an update broke it again....
It used to work for crying out loud!
Just did some more update, and guess what ? No more graphics again !!!
Seriously ???
Seam to be realated to kernel update. So what now ? Having drivers breaking at evry kernel update is not...
Yup, and in my case, it's a kernel updated that fixed it, not a driver update. SO i'm thinking there was some bugs with the kernel and the drivers.
anon, would need to test more, but what litle I...
Did an update Among that, kernel was updated. Rebooted, installed nvidia drivers again. And IT WORKS !!
Ah, trouble with the 970 as well ?
Worked fine until 16.04 for me. Now no nore.
I'm having the exact same issue :(
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2321407
And yeah, it's a pain, steam won't start :( I'll keep you posted if I find anything. So, not GPU related...
No, never noticed anything.
What drivers are you using ?
Did you tried 16.04 ?
I have the same issue. login screen all over again. Graphic driver all messed up. Card is an nvidia as well ?
Recovery mode, and an "apt-get purge nvida*" forced the fallback to the nouveau...
Installed a ppa. 364 no dice either. :(
Guess it's back to windows then :( I really feel like un-installing ubuntu. This shouldn't be happening, really. I'll wait a bit see if nvidia or canonical...

Welcome to the club.

I updated from 15.10 to 16.04.
Bad suprise when booting again, login screen is is poor resolution, and unity won't start.
After recovery mode and "apt-get purge nvidia" It switch to nouveau...
Ah, not alone there.
First try with usb. Worked fine.
And at boot, black screen. Nomodeset, install nvidia drivers.
Still got no sound. I'm updating, i'll see where this go. (i'm on 15.4)...
