Thank you. I just got an HP Probook 450 and I'm having a similar problem. I will try your settings... Tim

Re: Is Arch Linux for you?

Most likely, you just need to find and install libdvdcss2.

    Re: RTL 8169 Nic driver

I have no idea, then. My r8169 chip worked perfectly with 12.04's kernel.

Maybe try a different ethernet cable or a different port from the switch. Beyond that, I have no idea.

    Good luck.

    Re: RTL 8169 Nic driver

If you are talking about driver r8169, what Linux kernel version are you running? I used to have tons of problems with that driver, but everything seems to be fine since Linux 3.1.6 or so.

Re: Is Arch Linux for you?

I used Arch Linux for a long time. In general, I liked it very much, but I finally gave up on it a couple of months ago for several reasons.

I couldn't get it to handle my multi-device btrfs...

Poll: Re: Which of these is better?

Yep. With all other distros I've used I felt like a hamster running on one of those circular wheels just trying to keep up with all the changes and foul-ups caused by the changes. Debian is so stable...

    [ubuntu] Re: Do PPAs conflict?

In my opinion, yes, PPA's can cause serious conflicts. I found this out when I kept experimenting with the Gnome 3 PPA's for Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04. YMMV, but when you install a PPA, you are straying...

Poll: Re: How ideological are you about Linux?

I selected "I feel strongly about OSS, but willing to compromise". I wish I could run a completely FOSS system, but my hardware requires a few non-free drivers. I refuse to run proprietary...

Poll: Re: Which of these is better?

I agree. I gave up on Arch and switched to Debian sid (Siduction Linux, actually) because of systemd. If Debian gets to the point of requiring systemd, I will find something else.

[lubuntu] Re: Gimp is not letting me safe my work in jpeg

    You are welcome.

Also note that, exporting the image to another filetype and saving it, GIMP does not consider the "original" file to be saved. So, when you close the image, it will ask if you...

[lubuntu] Re: Gimp is not letting me safe my work in jpeg

It seems the procedure has changed in the latest releases. Now, you need to click the File menu, then select Export. I too liked it better the old way.

  15. [SOLVED] Re: Installed Gimp and now it opens my PDF files. How do I get back?

Interesting. Here is what it says:

    application/x-bzpdf=evince.desktop;...

This is a good thread. I have a similar problem, except it is Libre Office that has taken over my PDF's. I'll try the suggestions and see if any of them work.

    [SOLVED] Re: Sabayon vs ubuntu

I really like Sabayon. It is clean, solid, and leading edge. Until a few weeks ago, I had four distros on my PC. Then I cleaned them all off to re-do my disk drive configuration and decided to only...

Mouses (or is it mice?) are things for which I actually still prefer the Microsoft brand.

Re: Anyone else out there use Gentoo?

I also made a serious attempt at running Gentoo a month or so ago. I got it installed and plugged away at maintaining it for a couple of weeks. I agree with KiwiNZ, it is just too much trouble. I...
  21. Re: I came across this excellent distribution called Sabayon!

I never noticed Sabayon being KDE-centric and I never used it with KDE. I tried it with Fluxbox, Gnome 3, and LXDE, settling on LXDE. I also loved the rolling release aspect of it.

  23. Re: I came across this excellent distribution called Sabayon!

I don't want to derail this thread, but briefly: It is very light. I gets the latest kernels on the day they are officially released. It is the only distro I was using that handled my multi-volume...
