  1. Re: New laptop frequently freezes with Ubuntu

I would just install Xubuntu and be done with it.
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Is there an Ubuntu version of Windows' "Create System Image" feature?

Hmm, you cannot copy a running system (unless you use a special file system with snapshot features).

For an RPi, it is best and easiest to copy the SD card on another machine.

Re: Virtual Box 6.1 on Kubuntu

First create the machine, then go to the storage CDROM and select the ISO file, then restart the virtual machine so it boots off the ISO file.
  4. [xubuntu] Re: System dog slow / unresponsive during file copy to USB

As mentioned above, ionice is one of the fixes for this problem:
    ionice -c 3 cp /foo/largefile /bar

    Rsync is another possibility:
    rsync -av --bwlimit=100 --progress /foo/largefile /bar
  5. Re: New laptop frequently freezes with Ubuntu

Linux should never crash. I had machines run four years continuously without ever stopping or restarting for any reason - eventually the PSU blew up.

So, look at the logs to figure out what is...
  6. Re: tracker-miner filling my storage with the same log

+1 for removing the executable flags.

Also do a “kill -9 whatever” while you are at it, to actually stop the annoyance.

This annoying indexing program is one of the reasons I don’t use Gnome.
  7. Re: tracker-miner filling my storage with the same log

Tracker miner is an idiotic desktop search function of Nautilus file manager. It can be disabled:
"It appears that tracker can be disabled by simply going to Settings -> Search -> [Window bar]...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Shotwell cannot Send.. photos - Invalid attachment fd passed

Yup - snap packages tend to be immature and untested, so snapd is one of the things I uninstall on Ubuntu.

Canonical is trying its level best, but has a problem with a lack of QA. There is no...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Shotwell cannot Send.. photos - Invalid attachment fd passed

Simple - don’t use Snap packages. To me, it is simply not worth the hassle of trying to figure out how to make them work right.
  10. Re: program to deal with yi and other wifi cameras

In my experience, cheap streaming cams all use free software and therefore run RTP/RTSP streams. You should therefore be able to discover the IP address and port with tcpdump and view the video...

  12. Re: How to start Libreoffice Draw to fill in .pdf form

I prefer to use xournal. It creates an overlay. When done editing, do Export to PDF for the final.

[ubuntu] Re: Convert scan of handwriting into text ?

No smart phone? Do you even exist? 😂

So I looked at the Apple Mac App Store and there are lots of solutions for conversion of handwriting to text - just take photo of it, same as with a smart...
  15. Re: Does uninstalling LIVE boot apps free RAM?

BTW, the fastest and leanest full featured Linux is still Slackware. It is just as screaming fast as OpenBSD.

Also, Damn Small Linux is back - though it has put on lots of weight.

    Ubuntu has...

Hello, I live in a foreign country and cannot speak the language. I get by with the standalone Google Translate App on my phone. It can translate typed text, scan text with the camera and translate...

  18. Re: How to copy file to FreeDOS in a Virtual Machine?

Howdy, I suspect that you need to make a floppy disk image with your data on it and enable it in the VM storage manager then restart it.
  19. Re: Old Ubuntu file server died- how best to recover files. 12.04 I think..

If the MB is dead, then it is usually easiest to remove the HD and put into a USB adaptor.

  23. [SOLVED] Re: Can I backup on an ext4 USB and be able to restore if I lose main user for that U

Note that a decent backup system should run as root, to ensure that it will backup everything.
