My friend's computer had (thanks to some work removing Norton and other trash) a working copy of Vista, but I thought she might have a (bit) better experience...
Reinstalling mint had no effect.
Still offered win7 or 'recovery environment' or mint.

The only way I can get a usable computer is to boot into recovery and opt for failsafe graphics. Then I get a perfect screen hi-res as ever, and no longer a freeze-up on first keypress.

Works fine if booted in recovery mode and then low graphics.
