I have an old laptop (2.13GHz Celeron, 1GB RAM, Intel GMA), running Debian with Gnome 2 quite comfortably.

It seems that even hardware that is only 10 years or so old is still working, but 1 and 2 year old hardware, such as the fans in my other computer, are stuffed.

I started with Ubuntu 10.10 and switched to Debian 6.0.1a about a month before 11.04.
You need to install more operating systems.
If you want to make a useful netbook, install Linux.
If you want to make money, install Windows.
Debian. It's stable, and easy, and will run on any computer.
Just pop in the CD and do a core install will standard utilities.
