    Thanks for the response Bashing-om . . . I reinstalled ubuntu-desktop and lightdm.
    Still boots into tty1 and after 30-45 seconds the log-in screen comes up.
    Everything else is running fine . . ....

    After today's updates 12.10 boots to tty1. I can type 'startx' and get to the desk-top, or wait about 30-45 seconds after which it starts and displays the log-in screen.

    See the post above (#21) - that's the simplest fix for this problem.
    As soon as you copy libness3.so over to the proper folder, reboot and you will have networking back, and the icons.
