I made it so that the power manager starts up by using "lxsession-edit". "monitor power management control" was unchecked by default - I've now checked it to see if it makes a difference.

What might be an idea is to sync your bookmarks using Firefox Sync and do a clean install after. Are you sure this isn't an adware issue and just a problem with Adblocker not working? What websites...
Do these adverts pop-up no matter what website you are on? Have you tried a clean install of Firefox?
I did notice that myself when I opened it up in a VM. Hopefully they'll work something out to reduce it.

Lubuntu is a much lighter alternative if you're worried about memory consumption - I'd assume that memory is higher in 13.xx because of the UI changes, as stated above.
