Hi, I have had the same problem with booting from a live cd/usb. Using Plop boot manager solved this for me.

About booting from your harddrive, I honestly don't know how to solve that.

You can try to uninstall Sugar. If you really want to keep it, you might want to disable all the shortcuts the program uses.
I'm not familiar with Sugar, I don't know how to disable the shortcuts.

You might want to try Plop boot manager. It worked for me, but I doubt it will solve your problem in this case.

You can try to boot a live cd/usb by using Plop.

A workaround that might work is:
1. Install Plop bootmanager on usb stick 1
2. Install Ubuntu on usb stick 2
3. boot with usb stick one inserted
4. insert usb stick 2
5. choose boot from usb
6....

The reason why I posted Plop boot manager is that I could not start ubuntu from the cd. The cd worked at laptops though. Since it couldn't be the cd I tried a different approach.
