Softwaregl is not that bad in term of performance, and in waiting of karmic (with wich all work as expected)it's without tweaking the system the only good solution I found.
You can just download the tar.gz at blender.org, turn compiz off, and run the softwaregl version from the archive, and all will be allright.
Your problem seems more like an intel gma problem.
Try to deactivate compiz, and download the tar.gz archive of blender on blender.org.
And run the softwaregl version.

I have download the flash bios utility found in one post here, and run it with wine.
I choose to create an image (.img) in the right down corner instead of choosing to create a flash usb...
no prblems, it's just to see if you have the same bug so you can add a comment on the bug at launchpad.
So, can you download an image of live cd and test it ?
may be your bug is the same as mine, can you boot the live cd ?

As I say in a another place and in the bug I filled, the 2.6.28 serie, from ubuntu or from kernel.org don't boot on my system, the only way for me to see something instead of the blinking cursor...
I see that, and it's so frustating to think I will burn jaunty cd just for friends.

If the 2.6.29 is include I will be so happy, so so happy, because the 2.6.28 serie (all the serie) don't boot on my computer. And I compiled the 2.6.29-rc8 and it boot, so pleeease include the 2.6.29...

Ok, I have just compile kernel 2.6.29_rc8 from git, and it boot ok, will give a try to recompile the ubuntu kernel without MCE like I saw in a kernel mailing list.
I have done all this, and nothing does it, it just hang at loading the kernel, after the Starting up ...

I have tried to remove the uuid and replace it...
