I'm using an old desktop with VIA VT8378 (KM400) S3 UniChrome.
I've done fresh installs of both Kubuntu and Ubuntu 10.04 on separate partitions, but experiencing this problem only with KDE....
Consider to try free Sakis3G. It requires Usb-ModeSwitch but everything goes automatically, except you have to provide PIN (and, may be, your operator).
