Neither boot-repair's "repair installation" nor allowing the Ubuntu installer to use default partitions rather manually selecting them made any difference. Beginning to wonder about the hardware...

- unplugging the two HDD's and only installing onto the SDD doesn't change the behaviour

Using the 64 bit ISO - its an AMD Phenom II processor, so the i386 ISO doesn't even boot!
There's 6Gb RAM in the machine.
