Fire up the terminal, open alsamixer see if you can fix it from there.
->Install gparted, go to Gparted option
->Devices
->choose the floppy disk(identify by disk size)
->right click the disk
->choose the formatting options
->click on the check option on top.
The foolproof way is to download the iso, use unetbootin to make a boot disk(usb), and reboot system.
boot from the disk(usb), upgrade to 13.04. :)
