Strange, I can type nero in a terminal and get the program. It installs in /usr/bin. On my system (in Gnome) it is under Applications-> Sound and Video as Nero Linux.
How did you install it?
You can check by System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. It will show if there is a hardware driver available and if it is enabled. If not, you can enable through there.
A little more information please ... what is the graphics card (make and model). What graphics driver is being used?

As stated, no harm, no foul - it will run fine.
Although I used Nero, I had no problem burning the ISO to a CD (not DVD) In MS Vista. Just double-clicked the ISO image and Nero loaded up without a problem.
Hmmm ... I'm running Firefox 3.0.1 and have not had any issues. I can listen to MP3 or streams in Rhythym Box with absolutely no problem. I'm on the current 64-bit version of Ubuntu.

If you set the Visual Effects to none, then Emerald will of course not work - you need to have desktop effects (i.e. Compiz) enabled - check 'Extra' under Visual effects.
