Never had a problem with external USB Hard Drives, USB Optical Drives or Flash Drives in either Ubuntu or Debian. Plug them in and they usually auto mount.

Lenovo G5555 running Lucid 10.04 64 bit.
You'll need the proprietary ATI drivers for the video but Jockey pulled those in without issue.

I multi boot between 9.04, 9.10 and Debian Testing and only 9.10 has the Firefox issue....

I have an ASUS M3N78 Pro MOBO with an AMD Phenom x4 CPU. The live version of Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid works fine but after install the sound gets hosed saying incompatible hardware....
