I've been working on an updated, fully re-written installer. I'll post here when it's ready :)
(FYI, I separated the server installer from the client installer; they will be separate scripts :D)
Thanks :D and I'm updating it right now to add support for installing servers such as the default server, Bukkit, or MCforge.

There, sorry for the 2 week delay :(
My apologies, our ISP started throttling my upload speeds so I had to temporarily shut down the web server, so I'll be uploading it to dropbox shortly, sorry guys :(
This is fixed in my updated version of the Minecraft installer. I don't want to force it upon anybody, but I highly recommend using mine rather than the version that was originally made about a year...
And the moment you've all been waiting for - The client installer!
I tested this at least 20 times and I am 100% confident it works on any Debian-based OS (including Ubuntu :D).
You can download...
Forgot to mention I'll try to package it up as a .deb when I learn how and submit it to Mojang :)
EDIT: Scratch local user only, that can be a minor hazard when it comes to accidentally deleting...
No problem. I have the installer code re-written, no longer uses a combination of local user files and global system files, it installs a menu item to /usr/share/applications/mojang-Minecraft.desktop...
I am separating the Server install script and the Client install script in case someone hits the wrong number and accidentally chooses the wrong option. I am also rewriting the scripts from scratch...
I will be updating the shell script to use the OpenJDK-JRE-7 package as I found that is stable enough. I may also create a LWJGL updater script while I'm at it.
I'll post it on here soon, sorry...
