    ^ Along with canonical's guide and training, do some hands-on work at home. Set up a server, try different things, break it... there's no replacement for hands-on && self-learning.

    It's still possible that there is a memory issue even if it beeped, try starting the system after removing one of the memory sticks... then try the other one, etc.

    No, you weren't hacked. And most of those infected sites won't affect a *nix machine since they aren't compatible with the linux kernel/filesystems.

    Check the networking settings for each specific virtual machine. It should be set to a wired connection, should say NAT. But as long as the machine hosting the virtual environments has an internet...

    ^^. Optimus technology doesn't always work by default. Ironhide is what you're looking for, there is no benefit you'll find in Linux Mint that Ubuntu can't provide you.
