    The reason why you can not see the SSID at 5GHz is because that card is only single band 2.4 GHz.

    I think option 3 is your best bet, I have an older Laptop with 2 GB and it runs very fast with 12.10 installed. If you upgrade the ram now you will get quite a few more years out of that computer...

    With Bumblebee you need to purge the nvidia drivers you may have installed before installing Bumblebee.

    I am currently getting freezing, crashing and report messages on 2 Laptops with 12.04 installed. I occasionally boot these and keep them updated to see if anything has improved, not yet maybe one...
