Where did you install your previous Ubuntu 8.10? was it installed in a separated partition or not?

if yes, then format that partition after taking the useful stuff, then install Ubuntu 9.04 in the...

Your problem will probably be over then.

i would highly suggest to remove current Ubuntu and install Ubuntu8.04...

go and buy new RAM and install it.

go for Ubuntu8.04.
it very stable and thoroughly supported OS.

also is useful to try install "Gnome Partition Editor" using synaptics.
search in synaptics about "GParted"

I highly recommend to go for 8.04 immeduiately and stick with it for now, if ur hardware requirements is enough for it.
