    Google Maps does have a ruler if you click the "Maps Labs" link at the bottom of the left hand side bar you can initialise it. I think you might need to be signed into a Google account to do this...

    Have you tried "mixer" in the add new items to panel? This can be set to have a single master volume slider though I don't think it supports volume control using the scroll wheel like the indicator...

    you could reboot in recovery mode and turn compiz off. Just hit "Esc" at the grub screen and you'll get an option screen which includes recovery mode.
